Some have shown improvements in gait, walking speed, and reaction time, as well as cognitive and fine motor performance. Dance studies have included jazz, ballroom, tango, folk, and a series of slow, low-impact dance movements—though any kind of dancing would likely be beneficial.

Interestingly, according to a review in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in 2009, dancing may help people with Parkinson’s disease, which is characterized by rigid muscles, slowed movement, and […]

In the meantime, all dancing events will be at Dale’s house.

SIFD Report to Arts Council of Surrey

By |2016-11-16T21:35:08-08:00September 9th, 2014|Report|

As all users of Surrey schools, we are being hampered by the teachers strike. This is majority causing problems regarding an Open House we advertised and scheduled at Walnut Road Elementary School 16152 – 82nd Avenue, for September 25th.   This is where we meet Thursdays 7:00-9:00 p.m., to dance a wide variety of dances from around the world. We have an instructor. No partners or costumes are required.

Funding for the support materials distributed regarding this open house came from the City of Surrey’s Cultural Grants Programme for Capacity Building. We were kindly linked by the Arts Council of Surrey to this […]

What folk dancing is all about

By |2014-09-05T12:51:46-07:00September 1st, 2014|Reflections|

Folk dancing is not a performing art. Folk dancing is a celebration of people expressing their joy through music and dance. Folk dancing always puts a smile on my face. I always leave happy, refreshed, and exercised. That’s why I’ve been dancing for 14 years.

New season coming up!

By |2016-11-16T21:35:08-08:00August 25th, 2014|News|

Last year we had new literature designed and need to start distributing it. We are hoping for a good turn-out at our Free Open House on September 25. Key to that, of course, is that the schools need to be open! So definitely keeping an eye on the contract negotiations! For the moment, we are proceeding on the assumption that the schools will be open for our new season.

First major event of the new season is the Fleetwood Festival Table on September 6. More information at http://www.surrey.ca/culture-recreation/13766.aspx. We will be there from 11am-3pm with yet another colourful table display. Come and […]

Surrey International Folk Dancing Society Update 2012-02-15

By |2014-08-03T06:29:56-07:00February 15th, 2012|Report|

We held a free open house on Thursday January 19. A singleton, a couple, and a young family all came to experience folk dance. That evening was bitterly cold and it was extremely cold in the gym as well! That is the first time in the years that we have been dancing there, that we have been cold; on the contrary, we usually get quite hot because of all the exercise. Despite the cold, and to our delight, almost all the new participants returned the following week. So it was, after all, a successful open house.

Last week, on Tuesday, February 7, […]
