Over 30 enthusiastic children and their parents experienced folk dancing this morning at the Strawberry Hill Library! After leading dancing at 4 libraries this week, we take a week off, then do 5 more libraries in the second week of July. Lots of fun!
Folk Dancing in the Palo Alto, California area and elsewhere in North America is alive and well!
Dancing across Borders
Dancing provides physical, psychological, and social benefits galore, so put on your dancing shoes.
Many studies have found that dancing can improve balance, even in frail elderly people. Some have shown improvements in gait, walking speed, and reaction time, as well as cognitive and fine motor performance. Dance studies have included jazz, ballroom, tango, folk, and a series of slow, low-impact dance movements—though any kind of dancing would likely be beneficial.
Interestingly, according to a review in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in 2009, dancing may help people with Parkinson’s disease, which is characterized by rigid muscles, slowed movement, and […]
We celebrated our first evening back in Walnut Road School by inviting the public to experience international folk dancing. We learned and danced Kos, Pleskavac, Biserka, Zemer Atik, Jugo, Jiffy Mixer, Savila se bela loza, Twelfth Street Rag, Goscie Jada, Family Contra, and Stella di maggio. Next week we welcome Ira Weisburd to teach us more dances that will be new to the whole group. New dancers will get a chance to review all the dances that were taught tonight in two weeks time. Welcome!

What a wonderful sunny Saturday, September 6. Many people stopped by our table at the Fleetwood Community Festival to watch our dancing and pick up information. Let’s hope the teachers are back in school in time for our Open House on September 25.
In the meantime, all dancing events will be at Dale’s house.
As all users of Surrey schools, we are being hampered by the teachers’ strike. This is majority causing problems regarding an Open House we advertised and scheduled at Walnut Road Elementary School 16152 – 82nd Avenue, for September 25th. This is where we meet Thursdays 7:00-9:00 p.m., to dance a wide variety of dances from around the world. We have an instructor. No partners or costumes are required.
Funding for the support materials distributed regarding this open house came from the City of Surrey’s Cultural Grants Programme for Capacity Building. We were kindly linked by the Arts Council of Surrey to this […]
Folk dancing is not a performing art. Folk dancing is a celebration of people expressing their joy through music and dance. Folk dancing always puts a smile on my face. I always leave happy, refreshed, and exercised. That’s why I’ve been dancing for 14 years.
A good opportunity is coming up to see what folk dancing is all about. Come and see us at the Fleetwood Festival!
